People share cute pics of their Newfoundlands. Just amazing how tremendous they are.

These dogs are well known by their massive size and large fluffy coats. In the first sight they might look a bit scary but having a closer look again you can see that they’re actually nice and gentle giants. Newfoundlands are on the 5th position in the chart of large dog breeds.

Traits

  • Origin: Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
  • Weight: Male 65–80 kg (143–176 lb)
  • Female: 55–65 kg (121–143 lb)
  • Height:
    • Male: 71 cm (28 in)
    • Female: 66 cm (26 in)
  • Coat: Thick and straight
  • Colour: Black, white with black patches (“Landseer”), brown (not in Canadian standard), and grey (only US, not recognized by other standards)
  • Litter size: 4–12 pups
  • Life span: 8–10 years

The breed, as the name suggests, comes from the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Fisherman in the area needed dogs who could aid them onboard and with their natural ability to swim due to their partially webbed feet, Newfoundlands were a natural choice. The dog was a good swimmer and due to its strength they could easily save a grown man from drowning, plus, the fur kept them warm.
